Transition Year Physics Day Trinity College

On the 24 of February, Transition Year students from schools all over the country came together in Trinity College Physics Department for a day filled with fun and Physics.

We arrived in the morning and were met by Prof. Cormac McGuinness who warmly welcomes us and introduced us to our lecturers for the day. He was then followed by Dr. E. Finch who spoke enthusiastically about The Power of 10; walking us through the universe from the largest galaxies to the smallest particles. Mind-blowing.

After a break, Dr. Shane Bergin demonstrated resonance frequency using a wine glass and various other instruments. He also demonstrated why the sky is blue and how sunsets turn the sky red, using white light, water and Dettol to show us the ‘Tyndall Effect’.

This was followed by another physics lecture and after lunch we were separated into our assigned courses. We both chose Nanoscience and were treated to two lectures in state of the art facilities.

Altogether the day was a great experience and we all walked away with a better understanding of the different types of physics and what they would be like to study. The day was amazing and we would recommend it to anyone with an interest in science or physics.
